My GR III is my favorite camera because I can easily take it on all of my adventures. My only problem with it is that I never feel like I have adequate protection for it, especially considering that it's not weather sealed and I'm often either trail running, skiing or canoeing.

To combat that, I made three pouches for it: a padded carrying case, a cinch sack, and a roll top dry bag, all made from Dyneema composite fabric and seam sealed where appropriate. The cinch sack is for trail running, providing a barrier against sweat and dust while keeping the camera easy to access. The padded case is for daily use. The roll top dry bag pairs with the padded case on canoe trips, backpacking trips, or any situation where I need a bit more protection.

One of my favorite parts of making my own gear is the post-trip review. I just got back from Killarney Provincial Park, Philip Edward Island Ontario and the Moose River, my canoe portaging pack, had its first real test.

The pack is built around serious volume: 95 liters in the main compartment before you count the brain or side pockets. An ash splint x-frame gives it structure and transfers weight to the hip belt, which made portaging under a canoe more comfortable than anything I've carried before. The brain kept essentials accessible and protected everything underneath it. Most of it worked better than I hoped.

Not everything did. The torpedo pockets looked great, but turned out to not be very useful. The grab handle attachment started stressing the fabric in a way I need to fix. Small things, but that's the point. Every trip produces a better pack.

Setting up a servo motor on my barn find Juki LU-563 has been a journey. I got a lot of recommendations for different motors, primarily the Consew 750, but I was impatient and purchased the 750W Reliable servo motor with a needle positioner. It was readily available on Amazon (I know, boo) and would arrive before I headed out on a canoe trip. It had reasonable reviews and the company looked legit, so I felt comfortable paying the premium over the generic servo motors. It arrived quickly and undamaged. That's where the positives end.

I opened the box and immediately realized this was a Chinese motor with a Reliable label slapped on it. It clearly hadn't been inspected in any way. I installed it following Reliable's videos and everything seemed to go together fine. The motor turned on and appeared to work. Then I installed the needle positioner synchronizer, and that didn't go well at all. There was no clear way to set needle up or needle down. I followed a YouTube video that seemed reasonable and was able to get the needle to stop at roughly the down position, but it would jerk into place and randomly speed up. The foot control was also extremely sensitive. Needle up via back press or the controller just didn't work consistently -- sometimes nothing happened, sometimes it made a full rotation. I reached out to some mechanics and their conclusion was that the positioner was physically missing the contact that controls needle up. I called Reliable customer service multiple times and received absolutely no response.

I packed the motor back up and returned it.

After all of that, I called SewGold in Chicago to get their suggestions. They set me up with a 750W motor that worked perfectly without any fiddling. I've used this shop before and they are awesome - their customer service is in a different league entirely.

I'm not about to start my modeling career, but I am happy to say that my first running outing with my Run commute/fast pack was a resounding success. The straps were comfortable. The pack sat nice and high, and didn't really bounce. I feel like there is plenty of room for gear and daily work stuff.

I spent some time during this rainy day to put together two camera bag designs. These bags are designed to be pretty minimalist. The small size will hold a small mirror less camera and a short focal length zoom or prime lens. The large size will fit a DSLR and up to a 6" lens, which equates to a 200mm prime lens for me. Both of these bags are fully padded and have multiple carry options.

Two packs, one pattern.

The classic is built from 1000d Cordura, ballistic nylon, and nylon pack cloth with leather lash tab patches. The technical version is fully lined with nylon hex ripstop, 1/8" foam, and Venom 200 HPU body fabric, with Hypalon (csm polyester) patches instead of leather.
Both have lash tabs on the sides for attaching gear and removable side pockets.

The brain pocket went through five iterations before I was happy with it. It's contoured so it doesn't crush when cinched down, and cord channels on each side let the sides tighten and hug the pack body as you close it.

Inspired by a Kelty pack from the 1970s. The goal was a retro feel with the ability to make it your own.

All the fabric for the technical version is from @ripstopbytheroll. All the fabric for the Classic version is from @rockywoodsfabrics

I think I've finally landed on a design for removable side pockets that I like!

While designing these pockets I ran into two issues:
1) The original attachment system was too floppy
2) The strap to connect it to the pack wasn't able to get tight enough

Two changes fixed both problems.

I picked up 1/8" XLPE foam from The Foam Factory (surprisingly reasonably priced) and used it as a stiffener in the back panel of the pockets. This significantly reduced their tendency to collapse under weight.

I also sewed the attachment strap directly to the bag rather than creating a pass-through for a separate strap.

All in all, pretty happy with how this has come together. I've now patterned 5 different side pocket styles to work with this attachment system.

A well-worn Chouinard Equipment pack, still going strong. Classic L.L.Bean packs everywhere I looked.

Each of these packs represents years of use, years of adventures and stories. They were built during the golden age of hiking, mountaineering, and climbing innovation, by makers who prioritized function and longevity over cutting-edge or lightweight materials. The packs showed it.

As I grow as a pack maker, I find myself drawn to those same ideals. I want to make packs that truly meet my customers' needs, and that are still the pack they reach for 30 years down the line.

I seemingly have a pathological need to finish projects before leaving on trips. For example, I woke up at 4:45 this morning to finish this pack before driving from Michigan all the way to Vermont to coach at the NENSA U16 championship. Unfortunately I also have a tendency to make mistakes when I rush. In this case I sewed the two cinch collars onto the body of the bag in the wrong order, so that the bag functionally will not work. I guess some seam ripping is in my future.

Unfortunately it initially didn't have any stitching through the brim, which helps to keep the brim flat and control curling. This morning I added the stitching to this @arcteryx hat. Now it's going back into rotation.

I’ve been sick the past few days and couldn’t handle being stuck on the couch any longer, so I dove into a purely-for-me project.

When I’m working on a new design, I start by modeling all of the pattern pieces in Affinity Designer. From there, I build a quick mock-up, make adjustments, and then move on to the final version.

I’ve always been fascinated by vintage hiking and mountaineering packs from the 70s and 80s. Many of those designs were inspired by early Swiss military bags and later modified to be more purpose-built. I love their aesthetic, their simple and clever problem-solving, and their focus on durability over weight savings.

This pack was inspired by a vintage Kelty Cinch Sack from the 70s that I picked up on eBay. I was drawn to its unique lid system and side pockets. Instead of buckles, the lid uses cord that runs through both sides down to a cord lock and grommet. You can’t fully open the lid, but you can pull it up and over along the cord. It’s a really interesting and unconventional solution.

This pack isn’t a direct copy, more of an “influenced by” design. It’s built from 1000D Cordura with an oil-tanned leather bottom. The lash patches were made using custom die cutters I had produced.

Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. I love this style of pocket, but they were definitely the hardest part of the build. There has to be an easier way to attach them to the body fabric. If you have any tricks, I’d love to hear them.

On the left is a C.S. Osborne grommet and on the right is a KamSnap grommet. Both have an internal diameter of about 3/16", which is perfect for shock cord or accessory cord.

I originally bought the KamSnap press when I decided to start incorporating smaller grommets into my designs. At the time, the KamSnap press, dies, and grommets were the most readily available option. Recently, though, I started running into some issues with the die set, so I decided to switch to the C.S. Osborne system to pair with the press I received over the holidays.

While the inner diameter is the same, that’s pretty much where the similarities end. The KamSnap grommet is noticeably more domed, while the Osborne has a wider outside diameter and a significantly wider washer. The KamSnap has a slightly less industrial look, almost more like an eyelet, whereas the Osborne feels more robust and utilitarian.

Overall, I think the Osborne grommet is going to work better for me. Which would you choose?

I spent time this past week putting together a sewing guide for my new pickleball bag pattern. Making a pattern isn’t easy, but creating a sewing guide with photos is on another level. I spent time this past week putting together a sewing guide for my new pickleball bag pattern. Making a pattern isn’t easy, but creating a sewing guide with photos is on another level. Version 2 of the Pickleballer is done, in all its purple glory. For this iteration I made the front paddle holder a little wider to aid in retention, I remembered the side pockets, added an inner zip hang pocket and I increased the volume a little bit. These changes definitely make a big positive difference in usability.

My goal is to finish up this pattern and offer it on my website for other makers to download and make this bag!

Pickleball Bag V1

Design goal: build a bag with expandable front paddle storage and just enough space for layers, food, and essentials.

I’m definitely on the right track. If I had remembered to add the side ball pockets I’d feel even better about it, but overall the design goals were mostly met. The front paddle storage works surprisingly well, and I’ve already adjusted the pattern to better secure paddles side-to-side. I’m also really happy with the grommet-style cinch closure. It’s smooth and seems to work better than a standard channel.

Next iteration tweaks:
– Add side pockets
- Add an internal zip pocket
– Refine the front flap shape
– Increase the height of the cinch panel for better closure

Sometimes for a last minute gift I'm willing to make a few exceptions. I didn't have time to come up with a new day pack pattern, so I went out and bought a pattern from MYOGTutorials. The Summit 15 is an awesome pattern and completely worth the donation amount. With a few small tweaks (stretch pocket, foam back panel, and zip pockets) it became a killer day pack.

Fabric: 400d packcloth from @rockywoodsfabrics - this is some of my favorite pack fabric to work with
Stretch mesh: @ripstopbytheroll venom stretch max - this might be the easiest to work with stretch mesh that I've used.

I have a love hate relationship with cleaning. I hate doing it, but I really love how it feels when it is cleaner and more organized. Before you say anything, yes this is cleaner. I am able to actually find the fabric I'm looking for because it's organized in clear bins rather than stacked haphazardly on a shelf. The foam rolls are nicely rolled up and put away now instead of overflowing their shelf.

Somehow I misplaced my @matadorequipment laptop sleeve. My theory is that Mable, the puppy, hid it somewhere. This morning I gave up searching and decided to make one for myself out of some remnant fabric from previous projects. After one failed attempt, it came out pretty well!

The fabric is 500d cordura and diamond ripstop from @rockywoodsfabrics. The padding is @ripstopbytheroll xlpe foam, which is perfect for this application.
