I need name ideas for this pack! Right now I'm stuck on RetroKlettern, but I don't love it or really even like it.

I’m in the final stages of dialing in this design. It’s loosely inspired by a 1970s Kelty cinch sack I picked up, especially the lid system and the side pockets, which were what drew me to it in the first place.

The lid uses a cinch cord that runs through side channels, helping shed water while also letting the lid slide up and back for easy access to the main compartment. It’s a simple solution that feels surprisingly modern.

For this version I made the side pockets removable to add flexibility, and extended the lid wrap slightly for better coverage. The pack uses 500D Cordura for the main panels and 1000D Cordura for the bottom and pockets for durability where it matters most. All fabric from @rockywoodsfabrics

I’ve been sick the past few days and couldn’t handle being stuck on the couch any longer, so I dove into a purely-for-me project.

When I’m working on a new design, I start by modeling all of the pattern pieces in Affinity Designer. From there, I build a quick mock-up, make adjustments, and then move on to the final version.

I’ve always been fascinated by vintage hiking and mountaineering packs from the 70s and 80s. Many of those designs were inspired by early Swiss military bags and later modified to be more purpose-built. I love their aesthetic, their simple and clever problem-solving, and their focus on durability over weight savings.

This pack was inspired by a vintage Kelty Cinch Sack from the 70s that I picked up on eBay. I was drawn to its unique lid system and side pockets. Instead of buckles, the lid uses cord that runs through both sides down to a cord lock and grommet. You can’t fully open the lid, but you can pull it up and over along the cord. It’s a really interesting and unconventional solution.

This pack isn’t a direct copy, more of an “influenced by” design. It’s built from 1000D Cordura with an oil-tanned leather bottom. The lash patches were made using custom die cutters I had produced.

Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. I love this style of pocket, but they were definitely the hardest part of the build. There has to be an easier way to attach them to the body fabric. If you have any tricks, I’d love to hear them.

The vest straps distribute weight so well that a hip belt becomes unnecessary for lighter loads, so it is fully removable for situations like this. When I build a pack, I try to balance weight savings, durability, and flexibility, and I think this one hits that sweet spot.

I seam-ripped the gusset three times because it kept ending up too short. The flask pocket is too small, and the front and back panels are slightly misaligned.

This design is headed back to the drawing board, and it’s a good reminder that I really should always make a mock-up before committing to final fabric.

I originally bought the KamSnap press when I decided to start incorporating smaller grommets into my designs. At the time, the KamSnap press, dies, and grommets were the most readily available option. Recently, though, I started running into some issues with the die set, so I decided to switch to the C.S. Osborne system to pair with the press I received over the holidays.

While the inner diameter is the same, that’s pretty much where the similarities end. The KamSnap grommet is noticeably more domed, while the Osborne has a wider outside diameter and a significantly wider washer. The KamSnap has a slightly less industrial look, almost more like an eyelet, whereas the Osborne feels more robust and utilitarian.

Overall, I think the Osborne grommet is going to work better for me. Which would you choose?

This is one of those times. I really wanted to be able to add the traditional lash patches to bags like you would have seen on classic kelty, gerry, wilderness experience, etc. packs. I started trying to cut them out with a razor and hole punch, but they were horribly inconsistent and I wasn't 100% happy with the results. I reached out to Policy Customs in Georgia to see what it would take to get dies made based on a Kelty pack I have, to punch out the patches. It was surprisingly reasonable and the results speak for themselves.

These patches were cut using a hammer and a wooden cutting board on my anvil. In the future I think I'm going to set up my old forging press to press patches out.

My obsession with vest straps continues...

I spent time this past week putting together a sewing guide for my new pickleball bag pattern. Making a pattern isn’t easy, but creating a sewing guide with photos is on another level. Huge props to makers like @learnmyog, @stitchbackdiytrailgear, and @pricklygorse who consistently put out such great guides. Luckily for me, this is a fairly simple pattern.

Version 2 of the Pickleballer is done, in all its purple glory. For this iteration I made the front paddle holder a little wider to aid in retention, I remembered the side pockets, added an inner zip hang pocket and I increased the volume a little bit. These changes definitely make a big positive difference in usability.

My goal is to finish up this pattern and offer it on my website for other makers to download and make this bag!

Pickleball Bag V1

Design goal: build a bag with expandable front paddle storage and just enough space for layers, food, and essentials.

I’m definitely on the right track. If I had remembered to add the side ball pockets I’d feel even better about it, but overall the design goals were mostly met. The front paddle storage works surprisingly well, and I’ve already adjusted the pattern to better secure paddles side-to-side. I’m also really happy with the grommet-style cinch closure. It’s smooth and seems to work better than a standard channel.

Next iteration tweaks:
– Add side pockets
- Add an internal zip pocket
– Refine the front flap shape
– Increase the height of the cinch panel for better closure

I’d love any feedback!

I have a love hate relationship with cleaning. I hate doing it, but I really love how it feels when it is cleaner and more organized. Before you say anything, yes this is cleaner. I am able to actually find the fabric I'm looking for because it's organized in clear bins rather than stacked haphazardly on a shelf. The foam rolls are nicely rolled up and put away now instead of overflowing their shelf.

The fabric is 500d cordura and diamond ripstop from @rockywoodsfabrics. The padding is @ripstopbytheroll xlpe foam, which is perfect for this application.

This website will ultimately be where I sell and take orders for the gear I make. As well as digital patterns to make your own gear. For now I am using it to start my search for two motivated individuals to test my flagship backpacking bag design, the "Pisgah".

The old saying “you don’t know what you don’t know” couldn’t be more true. Earlier this summer, I took a backpack-building class with @alpine_luddites. When John asked what I wanted to focus on, I immediately said straps.

Before this class, straps were the most dreaded part of any pack build—multi-hour battles that usually ended in choice words and cramping fingers. During the course, John walked me through his theories on strap design and showed me his process. Now? These straps take me about 30 minutes to make. I honestly don’t think I’d have gotten here without that class.

No matter your craft or focus, a class will push you forward. Take a class!

Who first introduced me to them?” There’s never just one person, but I can point to Pete Whitney as the one who taught me to love the mountains, throw a frisbee, fix my (at the time) questionable music taste, and so much more. He left my life too soon, but I’ll always be grateful for the impact he had on me.

When @mfmw_ , Pete’s daughter, suggested I name this pack after him, it immediately felt right. This design will be called the PW Daytripper.

Sometimes I catch myself wondering, “Why do I like the things I do? I'm digging this new pack design!

Last weekend we took a three-day backpacking trip through Vogelsang Pass to Yosemite Valley—with a quick detour up Half Dome for sunrise. I won’t bore you with trip details (it was incredible), but I did want to share some reflections from the pack test.

For this trip, I built and tested two versions of my internal frame pack design. My pack was the heavier build with a cinch collar, a brain, and vest straps. My friend @kenziemiller21 carried the lighter version with a classic roll-top closure. The goal was to see how both setups handled real backpacking conditions: comfort, durability, and whether my design theories actually worked.

Both packs performed really well. They were overfilled most of the time and still showed no structural issues. The hip belts were stable, didn’t chafe, and carried weight comfortably. A solid foam hip belt is absolutely worth the few extra ounces, in my opinion. The vest straps were a highlight for me; they distributed weight evenly and the front pockets perfectly fit water, snacks, my phone, and a Ricoh GRIII. Kenzie preferred the more traditional J-straps, especially with the added phone pocket.

The only improvement I noted was the external zipper access—while the compression straps helped reduce stress, future versions will need additional ones for better stress relief.

I’m calling this a success! I’m now looking for two people interested in testing this pack design at cost. Each bag can be customized to your preferred features and build style.

My grandfather was a dedicated hiker and cross-country skier in the Adirondacks. When I first started hiking on my own, he gave me his old Hines Snowbridge pack — the same one he used to climb the 46ers. That pack became my high-school Nordic ski bag and went everywhere with me. Over the years the straps began to stretch out, the zippers stiffened, and a few holes appeared, so I decided it was time to retire it. After all, it’s nearly 50 years old — it’s earned its rest.

My grandfather was a dedicated hiker and cross-country skier in the Adirondacks. When I first started hiking on my own, he gave me his old Hines Snowbridge pack — the same one he used to climb the 46ers. That pack became my high-school Nordic ski bag and went everywhere with me. Over the years the straps began to stretch out, the zippers stiffened, and a few holes appeared, so I decided it was time to retire it. After all, it’s nearly 50 years old — it’s earned its rest.

This morning, as I listen to @nytimes food writers talk about their recent top 50 restaurant list on the Daily podcast, I'm reflecting on my favorite restaurants and my relationship with food. I've rewritten this sentence five times trying to capture what makes a restaurant special to me. In the most simple terms my favorite restaurants make me feel like I'm home. Where the chefs, owners and servers are excited to share the food that they made with you. Just like how I feel when I cook for someone else.

To me, this was @hexenbelle. I adored their cooking. It was unique, delicious and made me feel happy. I knew that when I was running late for work I could count on a breakfast pita to be rushed out to me in an unreasonably fast manner. It's the only restaurant where I could casually mention that I've been trying to recreate their fried potatoes and they would actually give me tips on how to do it.

I've been working on this design for quite a while, aiming to create a ~50L pack pattern that can adapt to different needs. Within the sewing pattern I can make choices to build a lighter weight pack or a more robust fully featured pack.

- Fully featured setup (as pictured): hip belt, front stretch pocket, cinch collar, removable brain, robust internal frame.
- Ultralight setup: frameless body with a roll-top closure and lightweight hardware.

With all the options included, and built in a durable fabric like Ecopak EPX200, this pack weighs in at 2.1 lbs.

The two biggest improvements I made this round were:

Internal frame system - instead of sewing webbing channels directly into the frame sheet (which I've done before), I sewed them onto the back of the foam panel sleeve. The frame stay slides into the webbing channel and is locked in place with a Velcro flap.

Hip belt design - more supportive, better transfer of load.

I personally like the cinch collar + brain combo, but I know a roll-top might appeal to more people, so I made the pattern so I can easily build either set up.

I also experimented with removable shoulder straps using 1.5" gatekeepers. I made three strap variations to test which ones I prefer for different uses (ultralight trips vs heavy hauling).

I have a scrap problem. I always think I'll be able to use the smallest scraps and instead they just accumulate in a box. Yesterday evening I decided to see if I could randomly piece enough of them together to be able to make a bag out of them.

This is what they turned into! All of the fabric, including the pack cloth/hyperD300 lining came out of the scrap bin. This took much longer than a normal hip pack, but I think the results are pretty sweet.

This is the first pack I'm offering up for sale. It is a version of what @ryantdonnell called the DuneScape bag. This version is approximately 30 liters, not including the roll top closure/extension. My thought process when designing this bag was to create a pack that would work as an everyday or travel bag with some front pockets for essentials, but could work well for those day hikes when you might want a larger pack for layers, food etc. This bag is still in the prototyping process, but it is of a quality that I am comfortable selling. Selfishly I also don't know if I can have another backpack hanging around the house.

I did my best to take descriptive pictures, but some of the details are hard to capture. On the inside there are two side pockets that I use for battery banks/chargers on my own pack. The rolltop has a y-strap compression system that is long enough to create a place where you could strap additional items and the buckle is magnetic.

Details:
Fabric - ultra 200 for the body, ultra 800 for the bottom, ultra grid for the pockets and rolltop, and venom stretch for the stretch pockets.
Structure - it has a foam back panel and is set up to accept a thermarest z-seat on the outside for added comfort and ventilation.

This is a big one in more ways than one: it's massive and I think it's a big step forward in my processes. This bag is a true step forward in my quality and durability of construction. My new machine is able to sew with larger, stronger thread and do so with a much higher quality seam. The lessons I learned at @alpine_luddites shop also contributed significantly to the choices I made while constructing this bag.

All that aside, here are some pack details. I am going on a Backcountry canoe trip over Labor Day weekend and I wanted to put together a pack for the trip. I wanted it to be LARGE, semi-modular, have many grab handles, without a bunch of stuff hanging off the side of it to catch on the canoe.

This pack is comfortable, but I just have to be able to suffer through a 1000m portage at a time carrying it, not carry it for miles and miles. With that in mind I went with a folded over @thermarest ridgerest sleeping pad inside an inner sleeve for structure and comfort. In an ideal world the straps would have better padding, but my order from the foam factory hasn't arrived yet, so I had to work with what I had.

The pack fabric is all 500D cordura for durability. This is definitely the heaviest pack I've made to date. I decided not to go with a laminate because I usually pack in smaller dry bags and I like how that provides some modularity.

I usually bring my camera on these trips. I picked up the @ospreypacks photo lid a while back and I wanted to be able to integrate it somehow. With a bit of 3/4 webbing and gatekeepers I was able to easily adapt it to this bag.

Anyways, that's a long rambling way of saying, I'm excited about this bag, so I hope you are too!

Yesterday I had the privilege of taking a 1 day class with John Campbell of Alpine Luddites. I had three goals: 1) make a pack (obviously), 2) Learn some tricks to make shoulder straps, and 3) get exposure to building frames. I feel like I met all of those goals and more.

Cordura and pack cloth stretch a lot!

My main takeaways were:

1. No matter the cost, taking a class is always worth it. You will learn so much that you didn't know you didn't know.

2. Moving slow is fast

3. Building for durability and the specific use case is often more important than trying to make the lightest pack possible. If you ommit all the crazy pockets on a commercial pack, the backpack naturally gets a lot lighter. Why not build something to last decades?

4.The pack I built is a Hot Ice pack made out of navy Cordura and UVX40. The pack design is a nearly perfect reproduction of a vintage Karrimore climbing pack.

If you look back in my history you'll see a few different attempts at making a 50L bag that is semi-ultralight. I'm at a point where I am 90% happy with it and really don't think I'll improve the main design that much. I can always change what straps, pockets and closure style I use as I need to.

Specs: Weight - 30oz Fabric - xpac vx07 body, xpac vx21 bottoms, ultra grid accents/pockets and venom stretch pockets.

I also changed my order of operations. Rather than finishing with the back panel I finished with the sides. This allowed for a little misalignment and fudge factor because I didn't have to perfectly mactch the bottom edge. It was much less stressful and worked better.

I plan to make removable hip belt wings with pockets as well as a brain.

Last week I made a tyvek prototype of the 45L-ish backpacking bag design I've been working on. I received some fantastic feedback, so I decided to put it into practice and make a functional version to see how it worked out. It helped that I got my package of ripstop by the roll fabric grab bag, because it helped keep the cost and risk down.

Features:

- A really large side pockets to hold water bottles or something like a crazy creek
- Bottom stretch mesh pocket (a first for me)
-A front stuff it pocket with a solid bottom and a bit of volume, so I'm not just relying on the fabric stretch to fit stuff.
- A removable frame sheet and layer of thin foam as a backer. I may add stays to this to make it more Ridgid.

-Hip belt wing attachment option (in the works)

What I'm proud of:
- I really like the design overall. I think there are a few minor things that I will change, but overall I really like it.
- I am really proud of how the multi piece straps came together. This was completely new and I am honestly surprised that they came together.
- I think it looks fairly professional. There are a few things that I could definitely make look better, but I think it looks pretty good.

What needs work:

- I need to be fastidious about the seam allowance or I need to make 100% sure that my pattern projector is calibrated accurately. I unfortunately had to splice in a small 1" piece of fabric to make up for this. Luckily it isn't obvious and I was able to maintain the integrity of the bag.
- Venom grid stop fabric is a bit heavy for a drawstring collar. The fabric is fairly thick and binds as the cord is pulled. I'm hoping this improves, but I am not holding my breath.
- Drain holes. I should have included them.

Kanken-esque Bag:

I’ve been staring at this fabric for a while, trying to figure out what to do with it. I need to make a few gifts, and this morning it hit me—why not sew backpacks in the style of a Fjällräven Kånken? The print is fun, the fabric was inexpensive, so I’m giving it a shot.

I’ve said it before, but it still feels wild that I can go from idea to finished piece so quickly. The game‑changer is drafting the pattern digitally and using a projector to cut the fabric. Ditching paper templates for digital has saved me a ton of time.

I’ve been staring at this fabric for a while, trying to figure out what to do with it. I need to make a few gifts, and this morning it hit me—why not sew backpacks in the style of a Fjällräven Kånken? The print is fun, the fabric was inexpensive, so I’m giving it a shot.

I’ve said it before, but it still feels wild that I can go from idea to finished piece so quickly. The game‑changer is drafting the pattern digitally and using a projector to cut the fabric. Ditching paper templates for digital has saved me a ton of time.

An awkward selfie to show my appreciation for the @pricklygorse Trail 15 bag! I was excited for this pack because I needed a bigger trail running vest to run into work with. Today was my first run with it and it worked perfectly! The only thing I would add to the pattern are elastic loops to help hold up the flasks as you drink them. Otherwise it's pretty perfect!

New prototype up for grabs!

I swapped the darted front pockets on my last pack for a single stretch pocket, added a zippered sleeve for the sit‑pad back cushion, and tried a removable Y‑strap plus a G‑hook roll‑top clasp. The experiment was a win—I’m stoked on how it turned out.

• ~30 L capacity (not counting the roll‑top)
• Recycled coated nylon throughout
• Durable, lightweight hardware

The design is simple enough that I can finish one in under half an hour and the pattern pieces are small enough that I can use scraps to build them. My hope is that it could be used as both a hip/sling pack, a backpack hip belt pouch or as an organization pouch. The pouch measures 7"x4"x2.5".

What do you think? Is this a reasonable design?

A rainy day dune hike with the doggos and unnecessarily packed packs (for testing).
